What To Know about the SEER2 and IRA Updates

November 28th, 2022

Here at Dayco Systems, we take pride in keeping the communities we serve informed. That said, it’s important that you know about two major changes ahead in 2023 that will impact HVAC costs and availability. Read on to learn more!

The SEER2 Update

As of January 1, 2023, the US Department of Energy will be implementing an increase in the minimum efficiency standards for total comfort systems. This update will impact the costs to purchase and install various systems, including:

  • Air Conditioners
  • Heat Pumps
  • Single Packaged Units
  • Evaporator Coils
  • Gas Furnaces

Once this change takes effect, we will no longer be able to install any equipment that does not meet the new minimum efficiency requirements for the Southeast region.

According to the SEER2 website, “To meet SEER2 requirements in the southeast region, residential central air systems below 45,000 Btu must have a SEER2 rating of 14.3 (15.0 SEER). Residential central air systems 45,000 Btu and above must have a SEER2 rating of 13.8 (14.5 SEER). In addition, heat pumps in any region must meet 14.3 SEER2 (15.0 SEER) and 7.5 HSPF2 (8.8 HSPF) requirements.”

What This Means for Our Customers

If you’ve been thinking about replacing your current air conditioner or heat pump, now is the best time to do so, before we no longer have the equipment available. It’s also important that if you have a newer system, you schedule routine maintenance for it, as maintenance will help your HVAC systems work as efficiently and effectively as possible throughout their 10-15 year lifespan.

The Inflation Reduction Act

The Inflation Reduction Act is anticipated to be the most aggressive action on tackling the climate crisis, and is expected to create clean energy jobs, make the tax code fairer, re-energize American manufacturing, and lower healthcare costs overall too. This will have an impact on HVAC equipment sales and installation, and we will keep our customers updated as more information becomes available.
