When you think about states in the southern part of the U.S. what kind of weather do you envision? If you’ve lived here for even just a year, you know that the majority of the time it is hot, and humid. So, you might not think about your heating needs very often.

But the fact of the matter is, even though you might not think this is the case, you still need your furnace to work well when you do need it. So, yes, furnace maintenance is necessary in Georgia. Read on to learn why!

Why You Need a Furnace Check Every Year

Professional furnace maintenance achieves three main things–it ensures your heater is inspected for any safety issues, it helps the system work efficiently, and it allows our techs to check for any signs of wear and tear that should be addressed before it turns into a huge repair need.

These steps help to make sure your furnace works as effectively and efficiently as possible, for as long as possible. Still unconvinced? Here are 6 reasons to get an annual furnace check.

6 Reasons to Get an Annual Furnace Check

  1. Ensure Proper Airflow

During your furnace maintenance appointment, we conduct a thorough inspection, and this includes checking your air filter and your ductwork. Both a dirty air filter and breached ductwork can create airflow issues that will force your furnace to run longer than it should have to, which is inefficient and ultimately costly.

You should be changing your air filter every 1-3 months during periods of HVAC system use to prevent this, but we will certainly do a double-check for you and make sure proper airflow is getting through your heater.

2. Improve Air Quality

Your indoor air quality is about so much more than simply the temperature of your home. Although the main purpose of your furnace is to regulate that temperature and keep you comfortable during our brief but chilly winters, you also want to have the right level of humidity, and you don’t want to deal with allergens.

When a furnace isn’t working as it should–for instance if it’s running longer than it should due to an internal issue–it can dry out the air and really impede your household health and comfort. If ductwork has holes, it can allow dust and other allergens in. We check this and more during furnace maintenance.

3. Help Avoid Emergency Repairs in Winter

Although we hope you don’t need it, we provide emergency furnace repairs in Canton, GA! We hope you don’t need it because professional maintenance can help you avoid it. In fact, routine furnace maintenance can help prevent up to 85% of the repairs your heating system may ever need in its lifetime.

This is because maintenance helps our technicians spot wear and tear before it has a chance to grow into a bigger repair need. For example, you might have something like worn-down motor bearings. This is absolutely normal! However, those motor bearings need to be relubricated so that your motor doesn’t overheat and break down–which would certainly be a costly repair need.

4. Keep Your Household Safe

This is especially important if you have a gas-powered furnace. Gas-powered heaters are not inherently dangerous. But when furnace systems aren’t appropriately maintained or repaired, they can become hazardous.

They have these components called heat exchangers–in a gas furnace, the heat exchangers fill up with combustion gas in order to provide warmth to the air blowing over them. If the heat exchangers crack due to age, they can leak potentially harmful carbon monoxide into your home.

Electric furnaces also have important components and wiring that could become dangerous if the system isn’t tuned up and checked on a regular basis.

5. Improve Efficiency and Save Money

The cleaning and adjusting that goes on during furnace maintenance helps the system work as efficiently as possible. Your furnace’s efficiency is measured by something called its AFUE rating, or Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency Ratio. With routine maintenance and timely repairs, your furnace can maintain 95% of its original AFUE rating. But without maintenance, you can expect that efficiency to drop by another 5 percent each year.

6.Maintain Manufacturer Warranty

The manufacturer warranty that comes with your furnace will come with stipulations. One of these stipulations is that you only ever have your furnace maintained and repaired by a qualified professional. This means that if you have an amateur do work on your system, and later find out your furnace needs repair due to a manufacturer defect, you’ll be financially liable for the repairs despite having a manufacturer warranty.

Can I Skip My Annual Furnace Maintenance?

It’s not a good idea to skip your annual furnace maintenance appointment. We recommend that this be the time of year you schedule your furnace maintenance session, because it’s before you need the system the most. But consistency is what matters most here–as long as you’re getting a professional tune-up each year, you’ll be in great shape!
