We’re in the midst of summertime, and if you’re currently experiencing air conditioning problems, it can be a little panic-inducing, right? You might be wondering if it’s worth calling for AC repair in Canton, GA or if you should just buy a new air conditioner altogether. If you do decide on the latter, then it’s important that you do not rush into this decision. Rushing into an air conditioner purchase could leave you with a system that’s not matched with your home correctly.

It will take talking to an HVAC professional on our team, but we can help you determine which is best–an AC repair or a new AC installation in Canton, GA, and if it’s the latter we’ll do everything necessary to make sure you’re set up with the right unit. In the meantime, read on to learn the difference between when repairs are best and when replacement is best. Keep in mind, these rules apply to your central furnace, too!

It Could Be Time to Repair If…

Your air conditioner is less than 10 years old and is well maintained otherwise.

The useful service life of any given air conditioner is 10-15 years, but this is only if the air conditioner is well maintained. This means that each year (or every 6 months in the case of a heat pump system) you have a professional closely inspect, clean, and adjust the components that need it.

It’s during maintenance that our staff checks for natural signs of wear and tear and any other problems. We will alert you to repair needs, and then you can schedule them from there. But it’s also possible that wear and tear can cause issues between tune-ups! Though maintenance does prevent up to 85% of repair expenses, you’ll eventually have some components fixed.

It’s also wise to repair if it’s a small problem. For instance, if you need a capacitor replaced, or a motor bearing needs lubricating, then repairing makes the most sense. It makes sense to need these small repair needs every year or two.

It Could Be Time to Replace If…

Your air conditioner is 10-15 years old, needs frequent repairs, and is simply inefficient.

If you find that your air conditioner needs repairs 2-3 times a year, and it’s a decade old or even older, and it’s working inefficiently, then a new installation could be right for you. Today’s AC models are even more efficient by nature than those of just a decade ago, meaning you’ll save on your utility bills by replacing them.

Professional maintenance will help your air conditioner retain up to 95% of its original efficiency rating, but there’s a limit to this. Eventually, parts will wear down to the point that no repairs will help, and efficiency will begin to decline. You’ll notice higher energy bills, a decline in comfort, and as we mentioned, more frequent repair needs.

If you’re still unsure of whether AC repair or a new AC installation is right for you, please don’t hesitate to give our team a call!
